    Mortality at Groups of Ages.—The 1570 deaths in Halifax in 1897 include 490 of children under 5 years of age, or 31*2 per cent, of the total deaths; between the ages of 5 and 15 years, 60 deaths occurred, or 3'8 per cent. ; between 15 and 25 years, 73 deaths took place, or 4k6 per cent.; 479, or 30*5 per cent, were registered between the ages of 25 and 60 years, and at 60 years of age and upwards, 468, or 29*8 per cent. In the same table are inserted similar rates of mortality in previous years for comparison. The death-rate of children under 5 years of age, which was 56'5 and 55'9 in the two preceding years, fell to 52’3 in the year under review, and is 3*1 below the mean of the decade 1887-96.
