    Dental Care Though definite progress was made during the year towards the re-establishment of the School Dental Service, the shortage of dental staff did not permit the organisation of a maternity and child welfare clinic dental service. A limited number of pre-school children did, however, receive treatment during the school dental sessions. The statistics are as follows: — Total number of pre-school children inspected ... 41 Number referred for dental treatment ... ... 36 Number actually treated ... ... ... ... 36 Number who completed course of treatment ... ... 36 Number of fillings ... ... ... ... 108 Number of teeth extracted ... ... ... 144 Family Via lining The Pembrokeshire branch of the Family Planning Association continued to hold clinics at the County Health Department, Haverford- west, by the permission of the County Council. Dr. Margaret Talbot is in medical charge of the clinics and advice on sterility and sex problems in marriage is available in addition to family planning guidance. Care of Unmarried Mothers and their Children The social work for unmarried mothers and their children is undertaken by the moral welfare workers of the St. David’s Diocesan Moral Welfare Committee. The County Council makes an annual grant towards the expenses of the Committee. At the end of March, the Plasnewydd Mothercraft Hostel, Burry Port, was closed by the Carmarthenshire County Council and arrange- ments were made for the use of other hostels in Wales and adjacent districts of England. There is no home or hostel for unmarried mothers in Pembrokeshire. Miss Maliphant, who had undertaken conscientiously the moral welfare work in the County for many years, was taken seriously ill during the year and had to resign her post for health reasons. Her services, given in a kindly and self-effacing manner, were much appreci- ated by the unmarried mothers who sought her help and also by doctors, nurses and social workers in the County. 2. DOMICILIARY MIDWIFERY At the end of the year, the County Council employed 48 mid- wives, who did part-time midwifery. This is estimated to be equivalent to 9.6 full-time midwives. Forty-seven of the midwives have been trained to administer gas and air analgesia and are equipped with the necessary apparatus.
