It can be shown that fat cells are derived from ordinary connective tissue cells. In some places— both in the embryo and adult—the protoplasm of the connective tissue corpuscles growing in size becomes filled with small oil globules, which, increasing in numbers, become fused with one another to larger globules ; as their size thus increases the cell nucleus becomes shifted to the periphery; ultimately one
