    by a sluggish and difficult circulation through the capil- lary vessels of a part. It is met with in feeble states of the system, and is determined either by the influence of gravitation leading to the accumulation of blood in dependent parts {hyposlasis), or by diseased conditions of the arterial walls. The effects of active and mechanical or passive conges- tion may be thus contrasted :— Active Congestion. Redness and pulsation. Elevation of temperature. Increased nutritive activity. Functional excitement. Increased oxygenation. Mechanical or Passive Congestion. A dusky livid tint. Temperature lowered. Diminished nutritive activity. Functional depression. Surcharge of carbonic acid. Both varieties when long continued lead to swelling, serous transudation, and disturbed nutrition, with a liability to haemorrhage; but these effects are much more marked in mechanical than in active congestion. HEMORRHAGE. H.EMORRHAGE signifies an escape of blood from the gen- eral current of the circulation resulting from the partial or complete rupture of a blood-vessel. Such rupture may be brought about by injury, disease, or faulty nutrition of the walls of the vessel; or by increased pressure of the blood within the vessel ; or by one or more of these circumstances together. Special terms arc applied to haemorrhage from parti- cular parts; thus, cpisiaxis signifies bleeding from the nose ; lurma/cmcsis—from the stomach ; rnclcoia—from the bowels; lutmaluiia—from the urinary passages; and viclrotrhagia or nunonhasia— from the uterus.
