    43 STREATHAM. I am glad to be able to give a favourable report of the public health in Streatham during the year 1890. The death-rate from all causes was below the decennial average. The death-rale from those zymotic diseases which are included in the Notification Act was only 0.19 per 1,000. The mortality in early life at different periods was below that of 1889. There was an increase in the mortality at high ages and from old age. The following statistics will confirm these facts and will disclose in detail the state of the public health and the sanitary condition of the sub-district. Vital Statistics. Population. We are now in possession of the census for 1891. The population of Streatham is 42,958, these figures nearly correspond with my estimates. I estimated that the population was about 40,000 in the middle of 1889. During the intercensal period, there has been a total increase of 21,351 and an annual increase of over 2,000. I place the population at 42,000 in the middle of the year 1890. Births and Birth-rate. The number of births registered during the year was 1,063, 522 of males and 541 of females. The birth-rate calculated from the total number of births and the foregoing estimate of the population was 25.3 per 1,000 persons living during the year.
