    It is of interest to report that 4,053 books have been added to the patients’ library since April, 1945. The following changes in staff occurred during the year 1948:— Miss Bridget D. Swayne, Food and Domestic Staff Supervisor, left on January 23rd to take up a post in a General Hospital. She was replaced by Miss Doris Scott as Housekeeper on November 1st. Mrs. Bartlett, Welfare Officer, left on May 22nd. Mr. Herbert Stanley Williamson, the Steward, retired on pension on May 31st after 38 years’ service, and Mr. George Catherall, his deputy, was promoted Steward. Your Clerk, Mr. F. R. Millet, was appointed Secretary and Finance Officer. In November, Dr. Alwyn Griffith and Dr. Kevin J. R. Ford, were appointed extra Junior Medical Officers, as a first step in increasing the numbers of Medical Staff under the Regional Board’s Scheme. Dr. W. V. A. Erskine obtained his D.P.M. in February and was promoted to Senior Grade. Dr. W. Llewelyn Jones passed his D.P.M. in June, unfortunately just too late to obtain his well merited promotion to Senior Grade before the Regional Board took over. The important post of Psychiatric Social Worker, approved by the Committee nearly 3 years ago is unfortunately still vacant. There is a great shortage of these highly trained workers. There is still a vacancy for a second Senior Assistant Matron. Other vacancies include two Sister Tutors, Deputy House¬ keeper, Welfare Officer and a male and female night Superin¬ tendent (both doubly qualified). I have the sad duty to report the death of Attendant John Harnott Benson, which occurred on March 6th after 27 years service at this hospital. He died from Diabetes and Nephritis. In conclusion I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the Officers and staff of the Hospital for their good work during the year. Very heavy burdens have fallen on the Officers in par¬ ticular as a result of the change over on July 5th.
