    (A) MALARIA. Ludlowii menace to Calcutta and its suburbs during 1939. 103. (A) Survey.—(1) Calcutta area.—Persistent and elaborate iearcbes for tbe breeding of Anopheles ludlowii in the city of Calcutta have revealed that the species was present in the municipal wards 4, 18, 21, 28, 29, 30 and 31. During the year 1939, breeding in Belgachia and Cossipore, involving ward 30 and stray breeding in Cornwallis tank in ward 4 was detected for the first time. The species can, therefore, be said to have infiltrated more and more towards the centre of the city. The breeding was under check during January, February and April of 1939. From May to October, the breeding was decidedly high, and it again fell in November and December. The localities in Calcutta recording the species are Ultadanga, Bagmari, Manicktola, Beliaghata, Nebugola, Tangra, Pagladanga; Gobra, Ghugudanga, Sinthi and Belgachia. (2) Salt Lal:e area.—In the Salt Lake area, to the east of the city the breeding of the ludlowii mosquito remained under considerable check owing to the continuance of the control operations in the area by the Bengal Public Health Department. The breeding of the species in a subdued state was recorded from several villages in the lake area during the year. The following places were more often involved, viz., Pagladanga, Topsia, and Gariabad on the western shore, and Noapatty, Gharbhanga, and Nagerbhery on the northern side of the lake. The breeding, however, conspicuously fell during the three months, October to December when it was practically negligible. (3) Riverside areas.—Intensive breeding of A. ludlowii was detected along the banks of the river Bidyadhari from Pratapnagar down to Port Canning. In the Bhangore section several villages such as Kulti, Chandpur, Nawpatan, Kantatala, Hatgacha and Khargachi were infested with the species. Hasnabad, Taki, Basirhat, Khariberia, Haroakhal and Maitrati along B. B. Railway were involved in the breeding, during the period. Falta, Sivanipur, and Jafarpur along K. F. Railway as also Budge-Budge (Jaliapara, Kumarpara and Lothian Jute Mill) and Pujali, Gadkhali and Shamganj not far from Budge-Budge along the left bank of the river Hooghly were badly infested during the year 1939. Batanagar w^as having the breeding of the species for the first time during the period. In almost all the stations in the Bauria-luberia section of the Bengal Nagpur Railway as also in Sankrail and Andul, the breeding cropped up again. Baruipur, Surjapur, Hotar, Magrahat, several villages under Police Station Diamond Harbour, Sangrampur, Jaynagore-Majilpur, Mitakhali, Piali, Ghutiari Sharif, and Matla, all being served by the southern section of the Eastern Bengal Railway, were involved during some part of the year. Bally under East Indian Railway, and several places under Baranagore municipality not far from Dum-Dum were again showing the breeding of the species. Boinchtala, Itkhola and Rajpur under Tollyganj were also involved.
