    MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE (1939^0). 104. (a) Training of indigenous dais.—The sum of Es. 14,000 sanctioned hy the local Oovernment for training- of dais during the year 1939-40 was distributed among 26 district boards, 30 municipa¬ lities, Saroj Nalini Dutt Memorial Association and Barisal Coronation Baby Clinic. The ISToakhali district board maintained two additional classes whereas one class was held in Garden Eeach as against two classes sanctioned for the municipality during the year under report. Xo class could be held by the Bhatpara, Xorth Barrackpore and Brahmanbaria municipalities, although one clas& was sanctioned for each of them. The total number of classes conducted for the training of dais during the year 1939 was 99 in which 1,084 dais were given training by 100 lecturers—three doctors having held two classes in the 24-Parganas district. 98 out these 100 lecturers were registered medical practitioners and the remaining two were Lady Health visitors. Two of the four classes held under the auspices of the Saroj Nalini Dutt Memorial Association were conducted^—one by a woman medical practitioner and the other by a Lady Health Visitor. The class held under the Barisal Coronation Baby Clinic was also conducted by a Lady Health Visitor. Women medical practitioners also conducted the classes held in the Comilla, Noakhali, Chittagong, Mymensingh, Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Bogra, Krishnagar, Midnapur and Burdwan municipalities. Altogether 996 maternity outfits were av-arded to the trained dais during the year. During 1938-39, 1,283 dais were trained in 110 classes. (h) The Government as defined in the Circular No. 721(26)P.H., dated the 2nd June 1939 (reproduced below), have offered help for the establishment of new child welfare centres and help the local bodies and voluntary organisations in the recurring expenses of the establish¬ ed centres by giving grants towards the salary of the Health Visi¬ tor : — Nos. 72i(26)P.H., dated Calcutta, the 2nd June 1939. I am directed to state that the question of development of mater¬ nity and child welfare work has been engaging the serious attention of Government. Government make annual grants to local bodies for the training of indigenous dais and also provide for training of pupil nurses and dais in the state and private hospitals. Suitable recurring grants-in- aid are made to maternal and child welfare centres and for holding of welfare w^eeks. The work of the Eed Cross Society has been
