Bengal’s death rate was also lower than all other provinces excepting x^ssani, North-West Frontier Province and Sind. The rate of natural increase was lOT per mille of population compared with 4T per mille in 1938. In infant mortality Bengal recorded a higher rate than three provinces, viz., Fnited Provinces, North-West Frontier Province and Sind. Whereas in the remaining seven provinces, Bengal’s rate in this respect wms exceeded. The rate of infant mortality in Bengal, wdiich showed a rise of 7‘8 per cent, in 1936, 3T per cent, in 1937 and 4-9 per cent, in 1938 went down by 20-4 per cent, in 1939. 7. Natural increase of population in Bengal.—By deduction of total deaths from total births, it will appear that Bengal’s population in 1939 increased by 507,121 against similar increase of 205,368 in 1938. All the districts except Calcutta shared in this increase in varying proportions. The table below will indicate that in Calcutta the rate was higher than that of the previous year by 2T per mille only.
