    (II) Total population of the estates.—A census was taken on the 31st May 1939. The total working population is 285,789. Of these, there are 40,902 Paharias and 244, 887 Madasias. The male population numbers 147,861 and the female 137,928. There is a total increase of 3,554 in the population as compared with last year. The population figures of each garden will he found in Table I. (III) Number of gardens inspected during the years.—Seven. (IV) Vital statistics.—(a) Birth rate.—The total number of births during the year was 11,378 (male 5,719, female 5,659) or 39 81 per mille. Of these 1,536 (or 37-55 per mille) were Paharias and 9,842 (or 40-19 per mille) Madasias. The figure for last year was 11,066 (or 39-21 per mille). (6) Death rate.—Deaths were 941 higher than last year. The figures are 6,976 (or 24-41 per mille) in 1938-39 as against 6,035 (or 21*38 per mille) in 1937-38. The corresponding figure for 1936-37 was 6, 054 (or 22-01 per mille). The higdiest incidence (13) was reported from Baradighi Tea Estate. (2) Smallpox.—Two deaths this year as against none in 1937-38. The number of deaths under all other heads has increased, parti¬ cularly fever, dysentery and diarrhoea and chest complaints. (Y) Infant mortality.—Deaths of infants under one year of age for the year amounted to 1,204.
