    25. Deaths from maternal causesi—During the year maternal mortality in conformity with the decrease in the mortality from all causes also showed appreciable reduction. Towns with a female popu¬ lation of 1,312,281, returned 701 deaths from maternal causes whereas rural areas with a female population of 22,661,371 recorded 15,091 deaths from this cause, as against 773 and 16,665 deaths respectively during the previous year. The proportion of female deaths from maternity causes in towns and in the rural areas remained however almost unchanged. Larger number of deaths from this cause occurred in the rural areas. The. statement below will indicate that the death rate from this cause underwent reduction in varying degrees in all the five Divisions of Bengal. There was another factor which if omitted would show that the reduction of the female death rate from this cause was more significant than the comparative statement indicated. The calculation of female deaths under the head was made on the standard of thirty days from the child birth during the year as against 14 days during the previous year. Deaths from maternal causes.
