![In the under-mentioned divisions of the Einpii'e, other species of the genus Mylabris may be employed in making the official preparations for which Mylabris is directed to be used, provided they yield a proportion of cantharidin equivalent to that contained in Mylabris phalerata, Pallas. India. Afbican Colonies. Easteen Colonies, MYROBALANUM. Myrobalans. The dried immature fruits of I|erminalia Chebula, JRetz. [Boxb., Coroman. PI. plate 197], usually distinguished in commerce as Chebulic myrobalans. Characters.—Ovoid or fusiform fruits from one-third to three-quarters of an inch (eight to eighteen millimetres) or more in length, and of about three-eighths of an inch (nine millimetres) in width; strongly shiivelled longitudinally, black, solid, brittle, having a somewhat shining fracture, the interior being a little paler than the exterior. No odour; taste very astringent. Dose, in powder.—\ to 1 drachm. India. Easteen Colonies. OLEUM AJOWAN. Ajowan Oil. Synonym.—Ptychotis Oil. The oil distilled from the fruit of Carum copticum, Benth. and Hook.f. [Bentl. and Trim., Med. PI. vol. ii. plate 120]. Characters.—Colourless, with an odour and taste re- sembling thyme. Specific gravity 0 917 to 0'930. It rotates the plane of a ray of polarised light from 1'0° to 1'5° to the right in a tube 100 millimetres long. If a portion of the Oil be cooled to 32° F. (0° C.), it should yield from 30 to 36 per cent, of crystalline Thymol. Dose.—\ to 3 minims. India.
