Tonics.—There are very few medicines which act as “ tonics ” to persons in good health ; and the very common habit of taking a “ tonic ”—no matter what—whenever a pimple appears on the face is not merely ridiculous, it is pernicious. Medicines in general only have a strengthening action when there is lack of strength in the patient; and the same strengthening medicine is not suitable for every kind of debility. T'h best “ tonic ” in any case is that medicine which has produced in the healthy a similar kind of weakness to that experienced by the patient. For special indications, see Debility. Tonsils.—Acute Inflammation of. See Quinsy. Chronic Enlargement of.—Scrofulous subjects, pain on swallowing, feeling of plug in throat, (I) Baryt. mur. 6—30, 8h. [A dose of Bacil. 100, gl. v. once a week is often of great assistance in these cases.] (2) Baryt. c. 6, 6h. Chronic suppura¬ tion, Ounp. 3x, gr. iv, 4h. Pale large swelling. Calc. phos. 3, gr. v. 6h. Pale swelling; urine dark-coloured and strong-smelling, Benz. ac. lx, Tab. iL, 8h. Paint night and morning with Papain solution (Pawlucas Co.). Toothache. Begin in most cases, if the indications for another drug are not clear, with Plantago 3, every ten minutes.
