Don't die young. Series 1, part 4, Eyes.

The fourth episode of a 6-part series in which Dr Alice Roberts, doctor and anatomist, explores the workings of the human body. This part looks at the eyes, explaining how they work and how we can care for them. Sarah Crump, whose family has a history of eye problems, assists Roberts with the dissection of a horse eye. Neil Hawkins undergoes laser eye surgery as Roberts describes the procedure. Sarah and her colleagues then take part in an experiment to test the effect of computer work on their eyes, and the results show that regular screen breaks are very important for our short-term vision. Dr Robert Cubbage and Roberts discuss macular degeneration, and Danny Gleeson describes how he lives with it. Diet is an important way to care for our eyes, so Sarah speaks with Professor Ian Grierson who recommends leafy green vegetables (which have lutein). Roberts then explains how UV light can cause cataracts, and Dr Colin Fowler helps her test different sunglasses to determine their UV protection. Sarahs grandmother Joan undergoes cataract surgery successfully.
