![Maternity nursing 17 use made of available health resources. Communication processes set up to encourage their use must take differ¬ ing perceptions into account. A study of Spanish- speaking villagers of New Mexico and Colorado showed they did not seek medical care unless the illness was pronounced and their health severely debilitated. An¬ other group whose idea of time was present oriented rather than future oriented were not committed to the concept of preventive health care. Communication across the cultural gap is one problem health professionals face in establishing quality care for all citizens. Some guidelines for cross-cultural health programs are given on p. 16. Crisis Successful resolution of a crisis increases a person's ability to resolve future ones successfully. Three factors act as determinants in crisis resolution (Aguilera and Messick, 1974); (1) perception of an event, (2) availa¬ bility of situational support, and (3) presence of adequate coping mechanisms (Fig. 2-1). Nursing interventions directed toward augmenting these three factors are nec¬ essary components in nursing care plans. Since crisis resolution proceeds in phases, which include the crisis event, a period of disorganization, a period of recovery, and a period of reorganization, intervening in any phase may prove therapeutic.
