![which means the system was strengthened against the de- bilitating effects of mercury, and fortified against the in- fluence of cold. Thus may the constitution be preserved, and the cure of many obstinate disorders be rendered less difficult, by the assistance of a powerful, though perfectly safe auxiliary. Mercurial Complaints. It is now pretty generally admitted, that this mineral, used indiscretely, or from necessity, in large quantities, fre- quently induces complaints that might not otherwise have existed, and which cease as soon as the mercury is got out of tlie system. Now, of all the remedies that can be em- ployed to fulfil this indication, not one is to be compared to the Vapour Bath. This may not depend, as Dr De Carro and Dr Gosse supposed, upon the fumes of sulphur; for the same effects have been observed by the Author from the simple Vapour Bath. This question may probably be de- termined, by applying a piece of gold leaf to the body of a person who has been lately under a course of mercury, while in the simple Vapour Bath. Mr Burlin has reported several anomalous cases, which he traced to the effects of mercury, and considered as purely mercurial: these were entirely cured by the Vapour Bath. Numerous cases have now established the benefit of the Vapour Bath in these complaints. One remarkable in- stance shall be mentioned. The Honourable Donald Ogilvie had gone through a smart course of mercury un- der the advice of Dr Gregory, for a liver complaint Be- ing upon a visit to Captain Ogilvie during the time he was deriving so much benefit from the Vapoui- Bath, ]\Ir Ogil- vie was brought by the Captain to this Establishment to spe&k to tJie Author.
