I am of the opinion that this water is fit for drinking purposes. S. Greenburgh Public Analyst. Fluoride Content The Chief Chemist and Bacteriologist of the Lee Valley Water Co. has reported that in a sample of water taken from the town during the year, this revealed a fluoride content of less than 0.2 parts per million. ( 7) Swimming Pools Sixty samples of water were taken from the seven swimming pools in the area, including three samples submitted for bacteriological examination. All samples were found to be satisfactory. (8) Drainage and Sewerage The work necessary to maintain an adequate drainage and sewerage system was greatly hampered in 197^ by a shortage of staff in the Department of the Engineer & Surveyor, Eventually much of the work was passed to Consultants, The contract for the new Sewage Works went to tender in 1970 and work commenced in February 13] 1. The Passveer Ditch, recommended by the Consultant Engineer was completed in May 1970. This measure improved the effluent of the sewage works considerably. Surface Water sewers gave trouble during the year under review in several areas in the town. Cannons Mill Lane has frequently been flooded and the work necessary to correct this defect has recently been contracted out to Consultants. The construction of the Link Road necessitated the reconstruction of a short length of sewer at Northgate End, There was a collapse in the surface water sewer at Lea Close - temporary repairs have been carried out but further work remains to be done on this site. The situation is similar in Hadham Road. Design is progressing in plans for the New Pumping Station, the Thorley Sewage Scheme and the Town Centre Sewer. Unfortunately plans of existing sewers are inadequate but much has been done by the present Engineer, Mr. Cox, to remedy this. Television surveys have been carried out in some areas. It is hoped that the staff situation will improve when the future of Local Govern- ment becomes more certain with the publication of the Governments Bill on Local Government in November, 1971.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b28930046_0019.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
