    The Jewish schools are to be regarded as private schools but, although the authorities do not contribute to their upkeep, the German Department of Education is entitled to supervise them. Jews are allowed to go to their own schools only. Those in the Warsaw ghetto were re-opened in April 1941, but they are in very poor condition. Only about 5,000 children were attending them in the summer of 1941. The only place where the Jewish children of Warsaw can see grass and trees is the cemetery. VeuG Oj5 Bra gies I. GENERAL CONDITIONS Conditions in Yugoslavia are believed to be distressing in every respect. How far these conditions affect the lives of the children, even responsible circles of the Yugo- slav Government have but scanty means of knowing. For this there are many reasons : the country is almost completely cut off from the outer world—very few people managing to escape and little information seeping through ; it is divided into many parts under different regimes, so that such information as gets through is for the most part only of local value ; finally, in large areas guerrilla fighting still continues. Northern Slovenia has been annexed by Germany and the remainder attached to Croatia which, in theory, is independent, but part of that country has been annexed by Italy, the rest being under the joint control of Italy and Germany. Montenegro is occupied by Italy ; a strip of country north of Belgrade has been annexed by Hungary ; Serbian Macedonia is partly annexed, partly occupied by the Bulgarians, whilst Serbia itself (with four million inhabitants) with the Banat (700,000 inhabitants) has its own Government but 1s occupied by German troops.
