The town is a busy one and rapidly increasing’. Tt is served by three lines of railway, two of which now belong to one company, and is the centre of an important colliery and agricultural district. Large numbers < f people enter the town for shopping and recreative pur- poses by the electric tramway (which is the property of the Corporation), motor omnibuses, and the very numerous wagonettes which ply between the town and s u 1 oun din g villa ge s. The main industries are the coal and iron trades, but there are several large mills, engine works, potteries, brewmries and tanneries. The shops are very numerous and better than are usually found in a towm of this size. Housings—Most of the houses occupied by the artizan class are two stories in height and separate tenements. The older, or central, portion of the town contains a number of houses which may be descril)ed as a single house, having only one entrance and witliout cross or through ventilation. They conlain a living room wTth a small scullery at the back or at the side, in wdiich the stairs are often hxed, and have a large and small bedroom^. The space under the stairs usually does duty as a pantry.
