    There is a large waiting list of persons wishing to gain admittance, and unfor. tunately the Scheme for the new Sanatorium has for the present been unavoidably postponed. 3 Health Centre, Mansakonko. On account of the shortage of Medical Officers, this centre was under the supervision of a Nursing Sister (Health), seconded from the British Red Cross Society. A great amount of both ante-natal and infant welfare work was performed throughout Central Division. 4, Maternity Health Centre, Basse. Much useful work was performed at this centre, which is proving very populai with the people in that area. B. Medical Research Laboratories, Fajara. The following is an account of work carried out by the above Unit. The staff of the Laboratories is working on problems which have arisen from the study of tropical disease in the Gambia, principally malaria, sickle cell trait and anaemia. These investigations are conducted in and around Fajara, and also at the Laboratories’ field station at Keneba. The Visiting Workers carry out their own research programmes and receive all the facilities of the Laboratories. Summary of Research. 1. Staff. (1) The effect and efficiency of long term prophylactic administration of antimalarial drugs, chloroquin and daraprim. (2) The effect of malaria on the state of health of a rural village commu¬ nity. (3) Investigation of the bionomics of anopheline and culicine mosqui¬ toes in the Gambia, and determination of the insecticidal efficiency of B.H.C., DDT. and Dieldrin. (4) Investigation into the aetiology of the enlarged livers found in th© Gambia. (5) Investigation into the prevalence of sickle cell trait and sickle ceil anaemia in the population. (6) Investigation of plasma and serum proteins by paper electrophoresis. (7) Malaria in breast-fed infants with special reference to the various! protecting theories that have hitherto been postulated. (8) Electrophoretic serum pattern of new-born Gambian infants.
