![say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive (and) remain unto the coming of the Lord, shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God. And the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we be ever with the Lord.”* “ Behold, I shew you a mys¬ tery; we all shall not sleep but we all shall be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump. For the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised, incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal (must) put on immortality. So when this cor¬ ruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality; then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, death is swallowed up in victory, j O death where (is) thy victory, O Hades where (is) thy sting?|| The sting of death is sin, and the strength§ of sin is the law. But, thanks (be) to God which giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ,”^f He, who “ was manifested to take away our sins” ;** who is “ the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for (the sins of) the whole world” jfj* who hath “ put away sin by the sacrifice of himself who, by that sacrifice, has “ abolished in his flesh the enmity (even) the law of commandments (contained) in ordinances,”|||| and hath made us “ free from the law of sin (and) death” ;§§ He, “ our Lord Jesus Christ,” has, indeed, amply fulfilled the promise in Hosea to which the apostle refers. “ I * 1 Thes.iv. 14—17. t mounts [xsv ov xoiJur)^o'oJuEc!'a, mccvrtg a\\oyr\cro[j.tc}oc. } ^53 Is. xxv 8, rendered “ He will swallow up death in victory TT£j7> also signifying for ever.
