    hyperjesthesia of the fifth nerve, and of the optic nerve. This kopiopia hysterica as it is called, is associated with hysterical symptoms, such as an exaggerated description of the complaints, and also with an intolerance to light, especially artificial light. At the British Medical Association meeting in 1888, P. W. Maxwell read a paper on '• Chronic Nasal Catarrh, as a reflex cause of Accommodative Asthenopia.^ He stated that while the catarrh existed the asthenopia was present, and was only relieved by glasses, which could be dis- carded when the disease was cured. And at the annual meeting of the American Ophthalmo- logical Society, in 1886, Gruening stated that he found cases, complaining of irritation of the eyes and pain in the morning, unrelieved by glasses ; that the trouble was due to nasal disease; and that out of two hundred cases treated on this supposition 150 had been benefited,^ Cheatham records three cases of asthenopia, which were only cured by treating the diseased nasal conditions.^ Rampoldi reports several cases of accommodative asthen- opia due to reflex action, viz., hysteria, neuralgia of fifth nerve, caries of teeth, and as a sequel of an operation.^ Trousseau mentions cases of asthenopia cured by catheterising the lachrymal ducts.^ VI. TREATM ENT.—of testing the sight. Having placed our patient six metres in front of Snellen's test- types we record the vision in each eye separately, and if the sight is defective we also record the glass that improves ' Oph.
