    3^ hours, t1 ^2 >> 3 8 hours ; he would in all probability never suffer from eyestrain if the eyes were normal. Persons engaged in any business or trade that requires close application of the eyes, may be greatly benefited by using weak convex glasses, say + i D., which have the effect not only of relieving the accommoda- tion but also, as the retinal image is larger, of enabling the work to be removed further from the eyes, and so at the same time relieving the internal recti. The strain of these muscles, which we shall consider under muscular asthenopia, may be produced by the same cause as that which produces ciliary strain, viz., too close application of the eyes to the work, so that by giving them weak convex glasses, by one treatment we can cure two forms of strain. We thus see that it is most important to make the patient distinctly understand that he must on no account bring his work nearer to his eyes but if anything remove it further away. We should also strongly advise these workers, to give their eyes complete rest when they have finished work, and whenever possible, to take out-door exercise which, at the same time that it improves the general health, also neces- sitates rest to the eye muscles. Children whose eyesight is normal do not suffer from eyestrain, but as prevention is better than cure, careful attention to the ophthalmic hygiene of the school-room, may save them from much trouble in after years.
