Description

False-coloured scanning electron micrograph of a close up view of the eyes in a hoverfly. Two compound eyes (for accurate perception of movement) and three simple eyes arranged in a triangle at the top of the head (ocelli; top centre of image) are visible. Hoverflies belong to the family Syrphidae and have one pair of wings. Width of image is 2 mm.
