![Venice maintained possession of the Ionian Islands until the extinction of the Republic in 1797. From tive and judicial acts, and all appeals, previous to transmission to the Venetian Government. “ The Provveditor-General da Mar was usually chosen from the se- cond class of Venetian nobles; he remained three years in office ; was responsible only to the Senate of Venice ; and in his person constituted what would now be considered the general government of these states. 44 The city of Corfu was permitted to send an ambassador, or repre- sentative, who was styled Nuncio, to Venice. The duties of this functionary, who was elected by the Council of Nobles (Corfnots), were to watch over the interests of the city, and to present and sus- tain such appeals as might be made by its inhabitants against illegal acts on the part of the Venetian functionaries. 44 The head of the local government of Corfu was styled4 Provveditor e Capitano all Isola di Corfu,' and likewise Prefect. His jurisdiction extended to cases relating to public servants, or employes; feudal pro- perty; the public revenue; church property, di jus patronato pub- lico ; and sentences by the governor of Parga, whose jurisdiction was limited in pecuniary cases to thirty ducats. [See decree of Dominico Mocinigo, Capitan General, dated 6th May 1691.] The individual holding the situation was always a Venetian, and usually selected from the Barnabotti, or poor class of Venetian nobles. 44 Next followed 4 II Potere Pretorio detto Reggimento,’ which was composed of three individuals, the president being styled 4 Bailo.’ These were likewise Barnabotti; and, in conjunction with a noble Corfuot, they elected annually the Council of Nobles. 4tf The causes of individuals not employed under government, and of the country people, were tried in this court, from whence appeals were carried directly to the Provveditor General da Mar. The indi- viduals composing this court remained in office two years. 44 In the courts styled Foro Pretorio and Prefetizio, the inhabitants of Paxo had their claims adjudged, as decreed by the Cavalier Bortolo Contarini, Provveditor General Inquisitor.
