![Two full-time oiperators are engaged on this work, and the following is a siiramarv of the work carried out during 1948 : — Complaints of Rat and/ or Mice infestation 321 Complaints found by Rodent Operators ... 09 Rats : Visits and revisits to dwelling-houses ... 2,828 Visits and revisits to other premises ... 1,936 Number of rats estimated killed as per Ministry formula ... ... 6,916 Number of rats caught in traps ... 108 Number caught by other means ... 38 Mice : Premises cleared—Dwelling-houses ... 60 Other premises ... 11 l\vo sewer maintenance treatments were carried out by the Rodent Operators to the public sewers and it is estimated that 3,923 rats were destroyed. Various properties under the control of the Local Authority, including the Royal Harbour, Refuse Destructor, Allotments, etc., were treated with satisfactory results. CATERING ESTABLISHMENTS. The Medical Officer of Health and vSenior Sanitary Inspector .submitted a joint report to the Council on the food premises controlled by the Council and dealt with the existence and/or adequacy of the following essentials for such premises : — Water supply, drainage, food storage. Washing facilities for utensils and staff, fsanitary accommodation, structure. I wish to pay tribute to the helpful co-operation given by tlie Food Control Executive Officer to this Department, ensuring every applicant for a licence becoming aware of the requirements of the Food and Drugs Act, Public Health and Sho]:)s Acts, before premises are licensed. Food inspection, and the inspection of food premises, has been called the silent service.
