    showing at any given time the amount of alcohol present in unit volume of blood. The diagram (Fig. 1) shown on the screen illustrates a typical result. In this experiment the animal, of weight 13*5 kilograms, was given 50 c.c. of absolute alcohol to which water had been added to make the solution contain 20 per cent, by volume of alcohol. This curve illustrates the relative rapidity with which alcohol gains access to the blood as com¬ pared with the extreme slowness of getting out of it. You will see that the alcohol in the blood is at a maximum about one hour from the beginning of the experiment, whereas even nineteen hours later there is a trace of alcohol left in the blood. Probably, in twenty-one hours the blood would be free from alcohol. This was made more evident by giving at this moment, indicated on the screen by an arrow, another 50 c.c. of absolute alcohol diluted as on the previous day. On the second day you will see
