    ANNUAL REPORT, 1942, The history of the year is a record of steady work and slow emergence from the abnormal conditions prevailing in the previous year due to air raids. STATISTICS. INTERN MATERNITY.—There were 347 admissions, an increase of 42 on 1941 ; of these 180 were first cases and 13 single girls. 14 ante-natal cases were treated and 1 post-natal. SICK BABIES’ WARD.—Nine babies were admitted, the average stay being 33 days. EXTERN MATERNITY.—It is satisfactory to be able to report that bookings on the district are gradually approach¬ ing a more normal figure, thus removing a cause of anxiety in connection with the provision of cases for the training of the pupils. 50 cases were attended in their own homes, on whom 466 visits were made by the District Sister and 625 by pupils. ANTE AND POST NATAL CLINICS.—101 sessions were held during the year, at which the total attendances numbered 2,498 ; 2,396 being ante-natal and 102 post-natal. This is an increase on the previous year of 1543. INFANT WELFARE CLINICS.—There were 51 sessions held and the total attendances were 2,172 including 220 first visits. 348 were seen by a doctor. The increase on the total for 1941 was 965. TRAINING SCHOOL.—16 pupils have sat for the Central Midwives Board’s examination and 13 were successful in gaining the certificate—a result which can be regarded as satisfactory for the second year of functioning as a Part II training school. On the 29th December Miss Coni visited the Hospital in connection with a survey of the Part II training schools being made by the Central Midwives Board. FINANCE. The Honorary Treasurer is much gratified to report that the financial year ended with a surplus on the Income and Expenditure Account. VOLUNTARY HELP. The Committee take this opportunity to emphasize their gratitude for the regular assistance given by many willing helpers, a list of whose names will appear elsewhere in the Report. This help has considerably lightened the volume of work represented by the foregoing figures and is greatly appreciated. An expression of thanks is also due to all those who have kindly knitted numerous garments for the babies. Special mention must also be made of the Women’s Voluntary Service, several of whose members are included in
