    gives as tlie reason, “that during the late epidemic of cholera, Allopathy stood powerless and aghast, while Homoeopathy grappled with the disease successfully; ” and as the result, the Judge of Benares, Mr. Ironside, Eajah Deonarain Singh, and a host of the English and native aris¬ tocracy, became convinced of the truth of the new system of medicine, and, as a thank-offering for the benefits derived during the pestilence, subscribed an ample fund to establish a permanent Homoeopathic Hospital in the city. The Indian Daily Neius states that a Dispensary has been opened in the Chitpore Eoad, and adds, that “ Homoeopathy is said to be making great progress in India, and the opening of this new, though second. Dispensary, appears to confirm this. A medical journal devoted to Homoeopathy has been estab¬ lished at Calcutta, bearing the title of the Calcutta Journal of Medicine, whose editor is Mohendro Loll Sircar. Synd Ahmad Bahadoor, while lecturing at Benares on Homoeo¬ pathy, stated the following curious fact—if it be one—that in the Hindoo Shastras, the principle of Homoeopathy, as now laid down, is extant, and has been from time imme¬ morial; that among the Arabs also the principle is admitted; and that Hahnemann only brought the system to maturity, by a uniform observance of the rule. A dispensary has been recently established in Adelaide, under the management of Drs. Wheeler and Campbell, the latter late house surgeon of the London Homoeopathic Hospital. The Melbourne Argus of Jan. 11,1868, announces the appointment of Dr. Braithwaite, a Homoeopathic Phy¬ sician, to the General Hospital of Castlemaine. A paragraph appeared in the Laneet, announcing that the practice of Homoeopathy had been forbidden under heavy penalties in consequence of the numerous deaths. For this canard there was no foundation whatever (as that periodical was afterwards obliged to admit); but to certain Allopathic journals it seemed a choice morsel, and one practitioner even paid for its insertion in a Scarborough paper as an
