Honorary Officers. Ansestfietist Registrars. Pathologist. time to time and for varying periods there have been four Physicians or four Surgeons. In all, since its foundation there have been fifty-five Physicians and thirty-three Surgeons in office, the latter having served on an average for longer terms than the former, one indeed, Mr. Samuel Howard, holding office for the space of fifty-one years, from 1759 to 1810. It may he well to record the names of a few who have added lustre to the Hospital by their personal character and scientific attainments. Amongst the Physicians maybe named Richard Warren (1756 to 1758), Lucas Pepys (1769 to 1775), H. R. Reynolds (1773 to 1777), John Latham (1789 to 1793), Henry Vaughan (1793 to 1800), Peter, M. Latham (1815 to 1824), H. H. Southey (1815 to J 827), P. Hawkins (1824 to 1858), Thos. WatSon (1827 to 1843), A. P. Stewart (1855 to 1866), S. J. Goodeellow (1858 to 1871), H. Thompson (1859 to 1879); C. Murchison (1866 to 1870), E. H. Greenhow (1871 to 1879), J. Murray, Assistant Physician (1871 to 1873). Amongst the Surgeons are the names of Ciias. Bell (1814 to 1836), John Shaw (1825 to 1827), H. Mayo (1827 to 1842), Jas. M. Arnott (1833 to 1848), Alex. Shaw (1842 to 1869), C. He Morgan (1848 to 1876), C. H. Moore (1849 to 1870), J. W. Hulke (1870 to 1895), G. Lawson (1873 to 1895) ; and amongst Assistant Surgeons W. H. Flower (1858 to 1862), R, W. Lyell (1879 to 1882), and C. L. Hudson (1895 to 1897). The list of Physician-Accoucheurs includes the names of Thos. Henman (1769 to 1783), S. Merriman (1809 to 1826), who subsequently became Treasurer to the Hospital, Ohas. West (1847 to 1850), Temple Frere (1850 to 1861), W. Priestley (1861 to 1863), J. Hall Havis (1863 to 1883), and A. W. Edis (1883 to 1889). The office of Assistant Physician was first established in 1840, when Hr. Mervyn Crawpord was appointed. There continued to be one Assistant Physician until 1853, when a second was appointed. In 1863 the number was increased to three and in 1889 to four. There was an Assistant Surgeon in 1746 and again in 1806, but the office was not permanently created until 1831, Mr. J. M. Arnott being the first holder. In 1858 the number was increased to two, and in 1894 to three. The office of Assistant Obstetric Physician was created in 1874, there having been previously only one Physician to this Hepartment. Reference has already been made to the special Hepartments, most of which are of comparatively recent origin, and the formation of which has considerably increased the Staff of Plonorary Officers. The first appointment of an Ancesthetist was made in 1874, the number of such officers being increased to two in 1885, and to three in 1895. The first incumbent of the office of Registrar was Mr. S. W. Sibley in 1853, and he continued to act in this capacity until 1861. The records show that there was also at intervals a Surgical Registrar, of whom the first to hold office was Mr. H. B. Balding in 1855, but it was not until 1867 that the permanent introduction of a Medical and a Surgical Registrar was made. To these have now been recently added an Obstetric Registrar. The duty of performing the post-mortem examinations devolved upon the Registrars until the year 1875, when the office of Pathologist was linked with that of
