$The faid effendi not only civilly informed us of this done, but when we had tranfcribed the words, he profered to fend it after us to Smyrna; adding, that if it was any piece of fandity, he was unwilling it fhould remain there to be trampled under loot. Designing from hence for Durguthli, we continue our jour¬ ney under the foot of Stpylus, which about two hours from the city ends in a dupendous precipice, confiding of a naked maffy done, and riling perpendicularly almod a furlong high. It was not a little furprizing, as we rode along under the foot of this hill, to obferve a certain cliff of the rock, reprefenting an exad nich and flatue, with the duefhapeand proportion of an human body. For Sipylus being the feat of the transformation of the unhappy Niobe\ there was ground of imagining, that we had either met with her ftatue, or with that which was the firft occalion of the fable ; at lead it was not improbable, that this was the work of fome an- tient inhabitants of this place, who pleafed themfelves in fafhion- ing the natural rock into fucli a figure, as might preferve the tra¬ dition of this celebrated poetic fidion. Not far from hence we begin to leave the mountain on our right hand, having the dream of the Hermus in view on the left; and at a large didance before us the fnowy top of the mountain Tmolus. Our road now lay thro a verdant and delightful plain, inriched by many advantages of nature, and not negligently ma¬ nured by the inhabitants. About the fourth hour of this day’s journey we paffed a bridge, ereded over a large river ; which, as thofeof the country informed us, is now called Nipht 'i, or Nymp/oe, and may probably be the Cry os mentioned by Plmyy as one of the far, in the fingular number. And as for that Quadratics, whom Bucherius and Uf- ferius will have proconilil in Afia in the year 169, his name was not Statius, but T. Nu- midius. See alfo mention of Quadratics in Ariftidis Orat.
