    extended branch, probably formed the first crane. Although no mechanical power be gained by this arrangement, yet it enables several men to unite their strength, and one man to maintain and hold fast the result of their combined efforts. That either this form, or the rude but useful adapta- tion of the Jever, common in all parts of Northern Germany, and sometimes seen in a more slender and commonplace shape in our own brickyards, may have been the original crane, seems not improbable; the name given to the machine being the same as that of the long-necked water-fowl, which, wading in the shallows by a river’s side, plunges its bill into deeper pools to bring up its food. The Crane, la Grue, der Kranich, la Grua, and Cigofial, indicating in French, German, Italian, and Spanish that the idea which furnished the name was the same in them as in the English language, or that they all derived the machine and the name from the same source, probably from the Germans. | |
