    -10- (e) Nose and Throat Defects Year Tonsils anc Adenoids Referred for Treatment Observation Cases 1961 25 239 1962 17 324 1963 45 126 1964 ... 34 91 1965 164 106 (f) Impaired hearing — Routine screening tests were carried out in respect of 4,895 children of whom 702 failed. Full audiometric hearing tests were undertaken in 2,127 cases. Of these 556 were found to have a hearing loss and arrangements were made for referral to E. N. T. consultants for treatment as necessary and the provision of a hearing aid where appropriate. In the majority of cases however Head Teachers were asked to arrange for the children to be given advantageous positions in class and the Peripatetic Teacher for the Deaf advised. Report of Teacher for the Deaf I am indebted to Mr. Hall for the following re port:- There are now 52 children with hearing-aids in the L.E.A's area, a net increase of 11 since my appointment in May, 1965. This total is made up as follows:- Pre-school children: 15 Primary school pupils 22 Secondary school pupils 13 Attending Ipswich P.H.U. 2 Of these children, 34 require regular sessions in auditory-training, speech training and language development. The remainder are managing adequately and require periodic checks only. There has been a net increase of 13 in the number of children requiring regular special help. This increase in numbers is accompanied by a wider scatter of cases in the county. PROGRESS 1. Pre-school Children The progress of all but 4 of these children has been most satis- factory. Four of them have begun to use simple sentences in their spontaneous speech, three are using single words meaningfully, and the remaining four have learnt to listen and are approaching speech- readiness. It seems safe to assume that at least five of these young children will be educable in normal schools provided that sufficient specialist help is available.
