There is a natural repugnance in innocence to associating with crime. This sensibility, which society encourages and cultivates in all its members, and is deemed one of its safe- guards, usually remains with the insane; it is sometimes ex- alted ; and if it is ever clouded or diminished, it is from disease; and then it needs to be cherished and restored as cer- tainly as any delusion or perversity is to be removed.
