Sir: In compliance with a resolution of the House of Representatives directing the Secretary of the Treasury to inquire and ascertain the most favorable terms on which suitable sites can be obtained for marine hospitals at Buffalo, Oswego, Galveston, Detroit, Wilmington, North Carolina; Newport, Rhode Island; Erie, Pennsylvania, and Apalachicola; and that he report the same, with his opinion upon the expediency of erecting hospitals at those places, to Congress at the next session, I have the honor to transmit, for the information of Congress, a copy of a letter (marked A) addressed by my predecessor to the collectors of the several districts named in the resolution, soon after its passage, in which they were requested to report the reasons which, in their opinion, would rec- ommend the establishment of a marine hospital within their district, and the terms on which suitable sites could be purchased. Answers to the call thus made have been received at the department,, and are now herewith transmitted, (see papers Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.) It will be seen, from the information communicated in ^iese papers,, that grounds affording the best sites for the location of such institutions in the districts of Newport, Rhode Island, Oswego, New York, and Erie, Pennsylvania, are now owned by the United States, and may be had without charge. Five sites, varying in price from $4,250 to $6,500, are offered in the district of Buffalo. That preferred by the collector will cost $6,000. Three sites are offered in the district of Detroit—one at $3^000, one at $4,500, and the other at f 5,600. S\ISIH
