    12 Shortly before the deposit of the plans of the Scheme, however, a member of the Vestry introduced to the notice of the Board on alternative Scheme by which it was proposed to carry the street from the north west corner of Exmouth Street, through John Street, across Tysoe Street and Rosoman Street, past the Roman Catholic Chapel towards the drinking fountain in the New River Wall at the top of Garnault Place, and it was decided to forward the suggestion to the Metro politan Board of Works. Upon the communication being placed in the hands of Mr. Thompson, the Member of the Metropolitan Board of Works for Clerkenwell, he consulted the officers of that Board, and was advised that its appear ance upon the minutes of that Board would be fatal to the Bill, as showing a disagreement between the Board and the Vestry upon the subject, and he therefore abstained from handing in the communication. Unon o Mr. Thompson reporting his action to the Vestry, a resolution was passed that his conduct had been for the best interests of the Parish, and therefore approv ing same. The Vestry likewise gave its assent to the measure of the Metropolitan Board of Works. The introducer of the alternative Scheme, however, thought proper to forward to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Works a report of the pro ceedings of the Vestry in the matter. Opposition was also said to bo threatened by the Marquis of Northampton (possibly for securing a locus standi only) and other land owners, the result being that the Scheme was then abandoned.
