    DEATHS 1970 was a good year so far as deaths were concerned, the total number only being 686 compared with 767 in 1969 and 743 in 1968. Although more males than females died - 362 compared with 324 - the men did rather better than usual because the discrepancy between the sexes is usually greater than this. The area comparability figure at 1.42 was a little higher than for 1969 when it was 1.41 but as will be seen from the table below both the crude and corrected death rates were lower than they had been for at least the past decade. The six main causes of death are as before but the numbers occurring from cancer, heart and chest diseases were scaled down in accordance with the death decrease generally.
