    and even the wisest, most judicial, and most experienced err daily. Complacency and cocksureness are out of place in the physician, and the shrewdest and best- informed is usually the humblest. Nearly every diagnosis should be treated as provisional. Hence the folly of too much dogmatism either of diagnosis or of prog- nosis in communications to patients. These cannot possibly realise the difficulties of the problem, and, being unable to distinguish honesty from in- decision, quickly lose confidence, to theirown undoing. That which is certain may well be communi- cated; but, in conveying that which is not certain, the Delphic precedent may wisely be followed. Students and younger practitioners will perhaps forgive a few warn- ings :— Beware of assuming neuroses because symptoms are indefinite so)
