![PREFACE. The following Tract contains—A Sketch of the History and Use of the Blowpipe; such characters of minerals as can be ascertained by the use of a penknife and blowpipe; and a new blowpipe arrangement of Irish Minerals. We have adopted the alphabetical arrangement, as being the most useful to travellers, and others using this work as a Mine- ralogical Vade Mecum, and have carefully verified Dr. Smith’s original observations in very many instances. The name of the same mineral is frequently repeated, as it has been found that the blowpipe characters of these minerals vary with the locality in which they are found. The Collection of Minerals on which these observations were made was very extensive, and we believe that the present work is a most valuable addition to British Blowpipe Literature [Eds.]](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b24878583_0007.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
