Many interesting references to America may be found scat- tered through the collection, e. g. My husband the late Colonel P. E. Welch was from an early period of his life an officer in the British Service here in England : the deaths of rich relations, who had large possessions in Maryland, Virginia and Baltimore, called him as their heir to America ... he became Colonel of the Loyal Maryland Fencibles, and served there during the troubles... Amongst [certain documents] was the correspondence of General Putnam of American celebrity, offering—from General Washington, my husband the second command in the Republican Army which was rejected with disdain ...
