    justly observed they never appear but in healthy sores, or where a slough is exfo- liating. They caiinot live in the acrid discharge of an unhealthy wound. They should however be removed; arid they may often be killed by washing the part with a strong infusion of wormwood in water or spirit, or the application of spirit in which camphor has been dis- solved. Pus is the natural secretion of an ulce- rated surface : but it cannot be furnished, nor can the process of healing go on, without an increase of action in the con- tiguous arteries. For as they have not only to nourish the parts which they supply, but also to produce netv ones, they must act more on that account. This exposes them to irregularities, to ex- cesses, and to deficiencies of exertion, tvhich must be treated, when they occur, upon the same principles as hfive already been pointed out, in directing the Con- duct of the inflammatory stage.
