    ammonia, especially when heated. The aqueous solution gives an immediate precipitate with chloride of barium (characteristic of all soluble sulphates). It does not acquire a blue colour on the addition of yellow or red prussiate of potash (absence of per- or proto-salts of iron). When calcined, pure alumina (AI2O3) is left behind. The potash alum of commerce is termed rock alum. COMPOUNDS OF AMMONIUM. [NH4=18] Name B. P. Preps. strength Dose Action and Use AVMONI^ ACETAS Acetate of Ammonia Liquor — 2 to 6 drm. Diaphoretic, diuretic, and re- frigerant. Ammonije Bknzoas Benz a'^eof Ammonia NH4C7H5O2 — — 10 to 20 grs. Diuretic and slight stimulant. Used in chronic inflamma- tion of bladder with alka- line urine and a tciidencj' to phosphatic depcsits. Ammokt^ Caruonas Carbonate of Ammo- nia Spiritus Ammo- nioe Aromati- cus Solution of (App.H.) — 1 in 20 3 to 10 grs. J to 1 drm. Stimulant in low states of the system; antacid in dyspep.sia with increased secretion of acid, and stim- ulating expectorant in bronchitis. Seldom used as an emetic. Same as carbonate. Nerve sedative; used in epi- lepsy and pertussis; similar to the corresponding pot- assium salt. Ammonit Chlortddm Cliloride of Ammo- nium or Sal Ammo- niac NH4CI. Solution of (App. II.) 1 in 10 5 to 20 grs. Alterative, cholagogue (?) emmpnagogueC?^. Relieves certain neuralgias. Used as a substitute for mercury in chronic inflammation.
