    11 Illegitimate Births. Of the total 1,342 nett births belonging to Hampstead, 83 or 62 per 1,000 births were those of illegitimate children. 39 of these were born outside tho Borough, chiefly in Lying-in Institutions, while 12 occurring within the Borough were considered not to be Hampstead children. The rate per 1000 births in 1921 was 56. This subject is referred to in the Section relating to Maternity and Child Welfare, on pages 63-77. DEATHS. The recorded death rate is the rate obtained by calculating the number of nett deaths per 1000 of the population. From the total deaths of civilians registered is deducted the number who were non resident persons, and, after subtracting these, the number of deaths of civilian Hampstead residents who died outside the Borough is added. The total nett deaths during 1921 was 973, or 11.2 per 1000 of the population, as compared with 9.4 in the preceding year. These deaths were distributed among the various Wards as follows:—No. 1 (Town) 147, No. 2 (Belsize) 143, No. 3 (Adelaide) 119, No. 4 (Central) 102, No. 5 (West End) 146, No. 6 (Kilburn) 204, and No. 7 (Priory) 112.
