![EXMOUTH URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL Town Hall, Exmouth. June 1973. lir. Chairman, Ladies and Oentlemen, I have much pleasure in presenting to you my Annual Report for the year ending 31st Dececiber 1972. Paragraphs 12 to 18 have been kindly provided by Mr, D,R. Redgvvell the Senior Public Health inspector. From a study of the vital statistics it will be seen that there were 313 live births registered, giving a standardised live biikh rate of 13.8 a little below the average for England and Uales. Of these 313 live births, 27 were illegitimate. During the year, 4S3 deaths were registered representing a standardised death rate of 10.3 vv'hich is below that for the Country as a vfhole (12,l). The average age at death was 73*5 for males and 74.2 for females. As in previous years the diseases causing most deaths were heart disease, cancer and cerebro-vascular disease. I am pleased to report that the Infant Mortality rate of 13 was again much lov;er than the rate for England and Uales (l8). The number of deaths from cancer, v/hilst relatively high, was a little lower than in 1971 ^ind deaths from Cancer of the Lung fell from 27 in 1971 to 15 in 1972. It is gratifying to note the low incidence of infectious diseases, especially measles. It is now 5 years since the usual biennial high incidence occurred (1968 - 328 cases). This extremely unpleasant and occasionally dangerous disease is gradually being eliminated and when 100% of all babies are vaccinated the disease V7ill virtually disappear. At the present time protective innoculations are given routinely against the folloY/ing diseases Diphtheria at 1 year and 5 years, YkTiooping Cough at 1 year, !]btanus at 1 year, 5 years and 14 years. Measles at 1 year, Polion^yelitis at 1 year, 5 years and 14 years, German Measles (girls only) at 11 years, T\iberculosis (B.C.G.) at 13 years. Routine vaccination of babies agednst Smallpox has been discontinued. In concluding this introduction to my report, I should like to thank all menibers of the Council and the Staff for their interest and co-operation given to me dxjiring the year \ander reviev;, I. •. I have the Honour to be Your Obedient Servant L, G, ANDERSON Medical Officer of Health.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29200179_0005.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
