![t can be relied upon as holding two fluid drams. The wine- glass is generally stated to contain IJto 2 oz. It will, however, oe nearly always found to contain at least 2J oz., or the eighth part of an Imperial pint. The writer believes that most physi- cians when ordering medicine to be taken in doses of a wine- ilassfu], calculate upon the wineglass containing at most 2 oz. rhis idea arises from the old wineglassful being equal to the 3 art of the old wine pint of 16 oz. A small tea-cup contains on an average about 7 fluid ounces, md a breakfast-cup about 12 fluid ounces. These figures are nuch above those mentioned in most books. An ordinary tumbler holds generally half-a-pint. In all 3ases where the physician prescribes an active medicine he should order the dose to be measured in a graduated glass. The mistake of counting drops as minims has been already :eferred to in the Pharmacy Section (p. 26). PEESCEIPTION WRITING. In one sense, this may be said to be the highest accomplish- ent of the educated physician, since it requires for its correct erf ormance an intimate knowledge of all the medical sciences and a practical acquaintance with the art of Pharmacy. It is to be regretted that a more intimate knowledge of this latter rt is not cultivated by the student of medicine. There could carcely be a more erroneous idea than that which one occa- Jionally meets with-^.e., that Pharmacy is beneath the notice )i the physician. The writer believes there are very few things which ^ive so eat advantages in after life to the physician as an intimate icquamtance with this art. intimate art^^-.^°^^^ Prescription should consist of the following 1.
