    efforts, he groped his way to the chest, and wrapping his cloak around him, lay down upon it. Hours seemed to pass, and at last, unable to keep awake longer, he dozed off to sleep. He was awakened by hearing heavy foot- steps tramping up the stairs, and then a bright streak of light shone beneath the door. The bolt was drawn, and two men entered the room. The first, who carried a lantern, was a big muscular fellow, with a cropped, black beard and a shock of hair that fell over his face. Behind him came a thinner man wrapped in a long cloak, and wearing a hat with a large brim, which shadowed his features. In one hand he grasped a drawn rapier. “ So this is where the bird is caged, eh ? ” he said, casting his eyes round the room, and trying to penetrate its dark corners. “Yes, there he is on the chest yonder,” replied the man with the lantern. Karl sprang to his feet as they came a few steps nearer. “Ah! my young friend is awake, is he?” said the younger man.
