![iQ - SJ-^u^h t e r of Animals (.Prevent ion of Cruelty ) Regu Ia tions 195§o These Acts and Regulations are for the purpose of preventing cruelty and ensuring that no animals shall be slaughtered in a slaughterhouse except by a person licensed by the local authorityo The licences of i slaughtermen were renewed during the yearQ Inspections were made daily at each of the two larger slaughterhouses, and as required at the small slaughterhouse, under the above Acts and Regulation0 Particular attention was paid to the provision of ade- quate water supplies and bedding etc6 9 in the lairages Animals were generally not kept long enough in the lairages to require feeding as required by the Prevention of Cruelty Regulations, o Inspection Service The following table indicates the number and different classes of animals slaughtered and inspected and the number of animals affected with:» (a) tuberculo sis (b) cysticercosis bovis (c) diseases other than tuberculosis and cysticercosis bovis. The technique of meat inspection used is in accor- dance with the Mea t Inspection Regulations 5 1963? and 100 per cent meat inspection was maintained. Tuberculosis was absent in cattle, but 1% of the total number of pigs inspected were found to have either Bovine or Avian Tuberculosis lesions, or lesions of a bacillary necrotic nature or the corynebacterium equi type, in the submaxi1] iary nodes of the head 0 Unfortunately^ the time necessary to establish the true nature of the lesions, microscopically and bacterio logically at the Laboratory is too long to be of other than professional interest and it is the practice to con demn the pig *s head, and examine the rest of the carcase and organs in detail before passing them as fit for food](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29428348_0056.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
