In this cafe the dilatation of the pupil was at firft owing to the compreflion of the thalami nervorum opticorum by the water contained in the anterior ventricles of the brain. But foon after, the origiii of thofe nerves which ferve the uvea be¬ ing alfo confiderably compreffed by the increafed quantity of water, the longitu¬ dinal fibres of this membrane (which by their natural contractility dilate the pu¬ pil) become paralytic and flaccid, as hap¬ pens in the bodies forne time after death; wherefore the edges ot the pupil being lels drawn outward, of courfe it would become fin alien The volatile fpirits applied to the nofe, by irritating its nerves, fo affefted the brain as to give fome vigour for a fliort F 2 time
