In endeavour- ing to put the mind in motion, we ought to take care, lest we shatter so delicate a machine by the violence of the impulse. In the class of what are called nervous affections, it unfortunately happens that the very essence of the disease often con- sists in a debility of the resolution, that the ailment of body arises from an im- potency of spirit, a palsy of the power of resistanee. A malady occasioned by the weakness of the mind is not likely to be cured by its energy. A tendency to sick- ness of the stomach may often be over- come by striving against it, but a squeam- ish disgust of life cannot in the same degree be counteracted by a similar kind of exertion. It is not uncommon to say to a drooping or desponding valetudina- rian, “Only exert yourself, and you will get
