    [ 4> ] gland, and the gland itfelf, and thus pro- ducing an inflammation. So far, there- fore, it will be independent of the gene- ral habit. By removing this inflamma- tion, and promoting an abforption of the pus that may already be formed within the tumor, we do indeed expofe the pa- tient to fome danger of general infection, but this danger will be inconfiderable, if the bubo is early difeufled, and may al- ways be obviated by the proper life of mercurial remedies. On the other hand, what do we do by bringing the gland to fuppuration ? We expofe the unfor- tunate patient to the certainty of a te- dious and painful procefs, and to a dan- ger of infe&ion, which muft inevitably increafe in proportion as the fuppuration advances : for it is certain, that while matter is forming, an abforption is con- ftantly taking place, and more particu- larly when the cellular membrane G around
